The Aegis Publishing Craft Standard

We believe readers have a right to know how the books they buy are made. Most publishers won’t tell you. Here is exactly how we work, including where we use AI, where we never will, and why.
The Standard
Every story we publish is created by a human author.
The story. The characters. The worlds. The themes. The plot. The dialogue. The scenes. Every draft, first to last, is written by the author. It is a requirement of publishing with Aegis, and every author on our roster agrees to it in writing.
No story, chapter, scene, or character is ever generated by AI. Period.
Where AI Fits
We use AI the way publishing houses once used a floor full of editorial readers: to review, score, and flag.
AI reviews our manuscripts. Developmental reads, story-beat checks, consistency passes, and a final cold read for anything a fresh-eyed reader would catch. It reads. It reports. The author decides what to do about it.
AI scores our manuscripts. We built internal editorial systems that grade every book against demanding thresholds for story craft and prose polish. A book does not leave the building until it clears them. The scores tell us where the problems are; the author fixes them, by hand, draft after draft, for as many drafts as it takes.
AI proposes line edits. In late-stage polish, AI reviews the author’s prose and recommends line-level refinement. A tightened sentence here, a smoother transition there. Every recommendation comes to the author as a proposed change. The author accepts it, rewrites it, or throws it out. Nothing enters the manuscript unless the author puts it there.
That last sentence is the whole policy in miniature: AI proposes. The author decides. At no stage in our process does AI-generated text flow into a manuscript on its own authority.
Where Humans Fit
AI is one voice in our editorial process, not the last one, and not the loudest.
Every Aegis book also passes through a human developmental editor, who reviews the story independently, and a panel of human beta readers, whose reactions get the final word before publication. If the machines score high marks but the beta readers say the ending doesn’t land, we fix the ending.
Why We Work This Way
Honestly? Because it lets a small company compete.
Editing is the slowest, most expensive part of publishing, and it is where legacy publishers have cut the deepest. Which is why so many traditionally published books now read like nobody checked them. Our editorial systems let us review every manuscript with a thoroughness that used to require a building full of people, without surrendering one word of the writing itself.
We are not anti-technology. The technology exists to serve the story, never to replace the storyteller.
Scope
This standard covers the text of our books, the stories themselves. Marketing materials, promotional videos, and some visual content may involve AI tools, as is now standard across the industry. The line we hold is the one that matters: the words in the story are the author’s.
Our Commitment
If our process ever changes in a way that affects this standard, we will update this page and say so plainly; not quietly revise it and hope nobody notices. This page is dated for a reason.
